বিড়াল পালন কি সত্যিই স্কিজোফ্রেনিয়ার ঝুঁকি বাড়ায়?

সম্প্রতি সামাজিক যোগাযোগমাধ্যম ও বিভিন্ন সংবাদমাধ্যমে একটি গবেষণাকে ঘিরে ব্যাপক আলোচনা শুরু হয়েছে। শিরোনামটি ছিল বেশ চমকপ্রদ বিড়াল পালন করলে স্কিজোফ্রেনিয়ার ঝুঁকি বেড়ে যেতে পারে। স্বাভাবিকভাবেই এমন খবর অনেক বিড়ালপ্রেমীকে উদ্বিগ্ন করেছে। কিন্তু গবেষণার মূল ফলাফল বিশ্লেষণ করলে দেখা যায়, বাস্তবতা শিরোনামের চেয়ে অনেক বেশি জটিল এবং সূক্ষ্ম।২০২৩ সালে Schizophrenia Bulletin জার্নালে প্রকাশিত একটি সিস্টেম্যাটিক রিভিউ ও মেটা-অ্যানালাইসিসে গত ৪৪ বছরে ১১টি দেশে পরিচালিত ১৭টি গবেষণার তথ্য বিশ্লেষণ করা হয়। গবেষণায় দেখা যায়, শৈশবে বিড়ালের সংস্পর্শে থাকা ব্যক্তিদের মধ্যে স্কিজোফ্রেনিয়া-সংশ্লিষ্ট মানসিক সমস্যার সঙ্গে একটি পরিসংখ্যানগত সম্পর্ক (association) রয়েছে। তবে গবেষকরা স্পষ্টভাবে উল্লেখ করেছেন, এই সম্পর্ক কোনোভাবেই প্রমাণ করে না যে বিড়ালই স্কিজোফ্রেনিয়ার কারণ। সম্পর্ক (association) আর কারণ (causation)—এই দুটি বিষয় এক নয়।...See more

মাইক্রোপ্লাস্টিক: একটি নীরব ঘাতক

শতাব্দীর অন্যতম বড় পরিবেশগত ও জনস্বাস্থ্য সংকটের নাম মাইক্রোপ্লাস্টিক দূষণ। প্লাস্টিক আমাদের দৈনন্দিন জীবনের একটি অপরিহার্য উপাদান হয়ে উঠলেও এর অনিয়ন্ত্রিত ব্যবহার ও বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনার অভাব পৃথিবীকে এক ভয়াবহ বিপদের দিকে ঠেলে দিচ্ছে। এখনো পর্যন্ত বিশ্বে উৎপন্ন মোট প্লাস্টিক বর্জ্য এক জায়গায় জড়ো করলে তা পৃথিবীর সর্বোচ্চ পর্বতশৃঙ্গ মাউন্ট এভারেস্টের উচ্চতাকেও ছাড়িয়ে যাবে। ১৯৫০ সালে বিশ্বে প্লাস্টিক উৎপাদন ছিল মাত্র ১.৭ মিলিয়ন টন, যা বর্তমানে ৪৬০ মিলিয়ন টনেরও বেশি। উৎপাদিত প্লাস্টিকের মাত্র ৯% পুনর্ব্যবহার করা হয়; বাকি অংশ পরিবেশে জমা হয় বা নদী-সমুদ্রের মাধ্যমে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। এসব প্লাস্টিক ভেঙে ক্ষুদ্র কণায় পরিণত হয়, যাকে মাইক্রোপ্লাস্টিক বলা হয়। অদৃশ্য এই কণাগুলো আজ পৃথিবীর প্রায় সর্বত্র ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে এবং মানবস্বাস্থ্যের জন্য এক নতুন হুমকি হয়ে উঠেছে।প্লাস্টিক আবিষ্কারের ইতিহাসপ্লাস্টিকের ইতিহাস শুরু হয় উনবিংশ শতাব্দীতে। ১৮৬২ সালে Alexander Parkes বিশ্বের প্রথম মানবসৃষ্ট প্লাস্টিক পার্কেসিন (Parkesine) আবিষ্কার করেন। পরবর্তীতে ১৯০৭ সালে Leo Baekeland বেকেলাইট (Bakelite) আবিষ্কার করেন, যা বিশ্বের প্রথম সম্পূর্ণ কৃত্রিম প্লাস্টিক হিসেবে পরিচিত। ...see more
